Nothing Else Matters

Here's how I spent my Christmas Day night.

Still don't like my singing, but I like the guitar work.

It seems like it's been a while since I've done one of these.

Hope everyone is well!

  1. Hi Kevin!

I can't listen here at here at work, but will check it out when I get home...I'm sure that your singing is fine.

BTW, I was listening to some of yours and DJ's music from the past year, and even Gabey's 'Garth" stylings.

That inspsired me to do some belated holiday music, which I will shamelessly post here, without your permission (don't tase me. bro...lol!)

The first is a Christmas classic, penned by Mel Torme, immortalized by Nat Cole, butchered by Andy:

The next is a traditional New Years song, with a rocking twist. It drags on a bit, and falls apart a little, just like one of my live performances. Enjoy:

    Happy 2012 everyone!

And thanks for letting me commandeer you blog, Kev!

  6. Thanks guys! I still don't think I can sing, but I do it anyways. Although, I have found when I do harmonies with myself, like on 1000 More Fools, it works better. I think it covers up the shittyness. (Yes, that's a word. At least it is now)

And Andy, you didn't butcher them! I thought they were really good!

  7. Funny, Kev, I think I do better with harmonies, too.

I think when you song harmony, you can "lean" against the lead voice; but when you sing lead there is really no point of reference except the melody in your head.

Next Xmas I am going to try to sing carols on 4-part harmonies...should be painful for everybody, lol!

  8. Hey Kevin. Good job on the playing and singing. Don't be so hard on yourself, I think you have real potential. But if you keep telling yourself that you aren't any good, then you will tend to not sing as often and if you want to improve you have to practice every day.

And I have a few practice tips if you're interested. By no means am I qualified to be a singing teacher but this is just some things that were taught to me that I find most useful.

The most important I think is breathing exercises. It would take too much space to type out my favorite one here but just google breathing exercises for singing and you will find a bunch of information about it. Next practice going up and down a musical octave. practice scales by stopping between notes and also in a continuous rhythm. And practice high notes too, it helps you to make better use of your diaphragm.

You do all that (every day) and after a few weeks you will be amazed with the results, because you already sing well. But the only catch is that you have to do these every day! And keep posting songs, I enjoyed it.

And Andy, I also liked the songs you posted. Thanks for sharing.

Also DJ had mentioned a long time ago that he wanted a few of us to collaborate and put some sort of song together. I kinda had a lot happening at the time but it's starting to lighten up. Did you hear anything about this?

    Later, paul

  9. Yay Paul!!!

    Sounds like you're doing well!!!

A group song would be *awesome* but quite a challenge too (DJ i hope you're lurking.)

  10. Thanks Paul. I'll have to look into some exercises. I've never considered myself a singer, other than in the shower or car, but I figured trying to cover songs without vocals would be weird. I guess I could try instrumentals....But I do enjoy singing. It's just never something I've taken seriously.

DJ is still game to do a song, if you guys are. Anyone have an idea of who does what, or have a basis for a song? Maybe we shouldn't do all this through the comments. Send some emails and let's figure something out!
